J.J. Abrams' Super 8 falls into some of the same traps as his other projects, setting up expectations of mysteries it can't possibly fulfill.

Poor lighting, scattered plot, etc etc etc. If I wanted to watch an 80s movies, why not just pull out an 80s movie? Do you really have to do over?
